Vinalhaven, Maine is a picturesque island community located about an hour and a half by ferry from Rockland, Maine. Just off I-95 in Rockland, one can take the ferry past some unique lighthouses and spend a day or weekend in this New England Island Wonderland. The seawater ride takes one past the lobster fishing grounds that produce huge quantities of the red crustaceans. Once on the Island the 2 1/2 pounders for lunch can make for a great eating experience. The island was known for the pink granite that was used in the construction of many landmark buildings in the United States; most notably the Washington Monument, the Brooklyn Bridge, and more. Some of the old quarries are now great summertime swimming holes. In the winter the Island can be quite remote as the ferry service is frequently interrupted, sometimes for long periods of time, due to weather.
